Life Lately

May 6, 2025 by Lauren Leave a Comment

I snapped this selfie at my son’s soccer game the other day because honestly, this is what life looks like for me a bit lately. And by that I mean, not as planned.

I was heading to a local conference directly after his game. He was going from his game with my husband to help my sister and brother-in-law. I went with my hair done, nice clothes on, ready to go to my next engagement. Our son had his bag packed with clothes and snacks for later. We were only 1 minute late…#crushingit.

Except we both ended up drenched to the bone and had to go back and dry off, change clothes. I had to re-dry and restyle my hair. It had been a misty morning, but I checked the weather! The radar and forecast indicated there would be no rain for his game let alone an absolute downpour.

Onward and upward. My plans didn’t change but I was a bit later than I intended.

I had been training for a crossfit competition pretty much since the last one I did in December. However, my plans came off the tracks when the very first week of April I came down with some respiratory flu. I was having a hard time and I ended up on an oral steroid for my lungs and an inhaler. Then I ended up with an inner ear infection (presumably from all the congestion). It got bad over the weekend, so I called Teleheath and they recommended some over the counter meds and a very expensive ear drop I was pretty convinced I did not need. I’ve had ear troubles since I was a baby and I was certain this was inner ear. ANYWAY … I made an appointment with my doctor on Monday..after it did not resolve on its own. (Day 4 of debilitating ear pain) But for the kicker, between the day I made the appointment (Mon) and the day I went to the doctor (Wed) I had the most violent stomach bug I’ve had in ages.
Do you know what is literally mind numbing when your ear drum is on the verge of rupturing?? Vomiting. By some miraculous grace, my ear drum did not rupture. And actually I begged God for some reprieve on the ear side of things, and thanks be to God, He granted my petition. Once I got to the doctor, I was like hello, I don’t know what’s happening but I’m heckin’ sick. I ended up with antibiotics and a steroid shot along with vertigo exercises. And now (2.5 weeks later) a referral to an ENT.

Point is, that competition the last weekend of April did not go as planned. I was only able to workout 5 times the entire month of April. That’s obviously not great. I was so disappointed. Prior to getting sick, I had dialed in my nutrition. I felt lean and strong; both muscle strength and cardio. However, due to the 3.5 weeks on non-stop onslaught of random illness-I felt sluggish, weak and used my inhaler to get me through that thang. I’m so thankful I was in good enough health to compete but it was not at all what I imagined.

And yet, the good was still good. Got to see my boy’s team win and make a memory with my parents standing there drenched in 49 degree weather. At that conference I got to see some of my favorite friends, and listen to one of my favorite authors and speakers. Though I felt like I was limping through that comp, I got to do it with my youngest seester and friend, Sarah. We got to cheer on many other friends and we placed better than we thought we would!

A brief adoption update would tell the same story. Things not going as planned, some bitter disappointment but still looking for the good in it. One of my favorite things I own is this ornament that says “God Wastes Nothing in The Waiting.” I hold to that truth as I love my sweet fam, prepare what I can and get back in the gym.

Don’t lose hope friends, whatever you’re waiting on.
